Get Involved & Transform Lives

Befrienders KL is run entirely by volunteers who give their time to listen. If you care about people and want to make a real difference, we would love to hear from you.

Join Our Community of Volunteers

Befrienders volunteers come from all walks of life — different ages, backgrounds, races, and religions. What they share is a willingness to listen without judgment and a commitment to showing up for people in their most difficult moments.

What to Expect

Volunteering with Befrienders is rewarding but it is also demanding work. You will receive full training and ongoing support from our team — you will never be alone in this. No prior experience is needed, just an open heart and the willingness to truly listen.

how it works

Becoming a Befrienders volunteer is a meaningful and serious commitment. Our selection and training process is intentionally rigorous — the people who call us are often in their darkest moments, and we hold ourselves to the highest standards to ensure every caller receives the quality of care they deserve. Here is what the process looks like:

1. Preview Session (mandatory)
Your first step is to attend a preview session where you will learn about what Befrienders does, what volunteering involves, and what the time commitment looks like. This helps you decide if it is the right fit for you.

2. Interview
If you would like to proceed after the preview session, you will be invited for an interview with our team.

3. Training (9 sessions, attendance compulsory)
Successful candidates will undergo a structured training programme consisting of 9 sessions. Full attendance is required.

The Befrienders Training Course is a creative learning process where you will learn listening skills, giving you the knowledge and confidence to support callers in crisis. You will gain experience of the types of calls you may receive through practice, exercises, and group discussions, and learn how to respond using Befrienders principles and practices.

In the process, you will gain greater self-awareness which may lead to the questioning of your own assumptions — helping you to listen in a more open and non-judgmental manner.

The whole training period, including workshop sessions and supervised on-the-phone practice, is approximately six months.

4. Probation
After completing training, volunteers enter a probation period where they begin taking calls under supervision.

5. Qualified Volunteer
Once you successfully complete probation, you become a fully qualified Befrienders volunteer.
